A Lot of Things Must Take Place Before The Two Spies Return for Rahab

Our story of Rahab and the scarlet cord in the window continues as the two spies return for her.  A lot of things must take place before that happens, however.  Meanwhile, Rahab and her family must wait in faith. In my last blog, Rahab tells the spies from Israel that she believes in their One True God.  She begs the two spies to rescue her and her family when they attack and destroy her city Jericho. The reason: she’d hidden them from the king and his men. They agree with one condition:

The Spies One Condition

Joshua 2:Now the men had said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.”

Joshua 2 Rahab Ties the Scarlet Cord in the Window

Joshua 2:21 “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.”So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.”

The Scarlet Cord Tied in the Window is like Jesus Shed Blood on the Cross

Rahab must wait and trust that the spies will keep their word. In faith, she ties the scarlet cord in the window. The scarlet cord is like Jesus shed blood on the cross for us. It tells us that when we turn away from our sinful ways, and in faith, believe in Jesus as our Saviour, He rescues us and gives us a new life with Him.  Like Tamar, we are hopeless in the blackness of our sin, but God made a way for us through His Son Jesus Christ.  Read on to see how Jesus is a part of this amazing rescue as the two spies return for Rahab and her family.

Events After the Spies Leave Rahab

As you read through the book of Joshua you will see all things that take place before spies return for Rahab.  The scarlet cord in the window must hang for many many weeks. Rahab and her family must wait in faith believing that they will be rescued as the spies promised. Below is a list of all the events that take place before the spies and the people of Israel return.

Joshua 3

  • Joshua and all the Israelites begin to move toward Jericho.
  • The Lord of All the Earth causes the Jordan River to pile up in a heap and all the people crossed over on dry land.

Joshua 4

  • The Israelites camp at Gilgal and Joshua sets up 12 stones to commemorate their crossing.

Joshua 5

  • The Israelite men are circumcised.
  • The Israelites have Passover and the manna stops.
  • The commander (Jesus) of the Lord’s army appears to Joshua.

Joshua 6

Finally, finally after weeks and weeks, Jericho is destroyed. Tamar and her family are finally rescued.  I wonder what kind of shape that scarlet cord is in?

“Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.

Rahab and her family have a fresh start. However, it is significant that she begins outside the camp of Israel. Did you know Jesus our Saviour, was crucified outside Jerusalem, at Calvary? Your sin, Rahab’s sin, and my sin was born by Jesus’ shed blood at Calvary.  The scarlet cord in the window is the scarlet thread of scripture.

Rahab is mentioned in the chapter of faith in Hebrews 11:31 ‘By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.’  When we receive Jesus as our Saviour, our rescuer, we are no longer ‘outside the camp. He brings us into the camp, our home in heaven.  Is He your saviour dear one?
